The Act of Being Seen

Updated: Oct 6

Acknowledgement is the practice of honoring your self-awareness.

It’s noticing what’s happening inside of you —

your thoughts, sensations, feelings, beliefs, emotions, patterns —

and naming it with compassion rather than resistance or judgement.

Acknowledgement is a courageous act of Self-Love.

When we notice and name our inner experiences out loud,

instead of pushing them away,

we’re gently letting ourselves know:

"I see you, I hear you, and you matter."

At first, Acknowledgement may seem simple, or even unnecessary,

but it’s actually an essential component of any healthy relationship,

especially the one with yourself.

Just as we can’t bury pain with distractions and expect it to heal,

we can’t bypass difficulties in relationships

and expect the connection to be healthy ~

with ourselves, or anyone else.

What we name with compassion, can be fully felt and then freed, with love.

We all share the deep core need to feel Seen.

If you reflect on it,

you’ll realize that during times when you’re really upset,

if a friend tries to distract you with a laugh or offers a quick fix,

you may be pacified for the moment,

but deep down you don’t really feel seen.

When a friend notices and names what we’re experiencing,

embracing the opportunity to Be present and truly witness us as we are,

it feels deeply supportive ~

we feel genuinely loved and understood.

It’s only when someone clearly sees us,

that they can fully Be with us…

And the same is true for ourselves.

Acknowledging yourself might sound like:

  • "I see the part of me that feels afraid right now."

  • "I’m feeling disappointed that I’m not where I want to be yet,

but I’m proud of my progress."

  • "I notice that I’m resistant to having this important conversation,

and it makes sense that I’m feeling this way,

but I don’t want to distract myself from it because it matters to me."

When you're willing to see yourself clearly, with openness and honesty,

you can truly Be present with yourself in whatever you're experiencing.

When we do this for ourselves a magical thing happens ~

our emotions are naturally processed and moved out of our bodies ~

and we feel so much lighter when we're not carrying suppressed emotions.

Acknowledging your feelings is the practice of honoring them,

so you can fully feel them and let them pass through you with love.

Being seen is the greatest gift we can offer someone ~ most importantly ourselves.

🌿 A Gentle Invitation for a Moment of Presence:

Close your eyes, take a deep breath, place a hand on your heart,

and Acknowledge what you’re experiencing in this moment:

I see that I’m feeling ________. I can Be present with myself in this moment.
