Noticing What You're Feeling

The most meaningful part of being human
is experiencing the full spectrum of feelings.
Each day offers us a vast array of emotions,
if we’re paying attention.
But so often we drift along like passive passengers of our life,
oblivious to what’s happening below our own surface.
Even if we regularly practice self-awareness and Self-Love,
there may still be times when we skip over what we're truly feeling
and jump to distraction or disconnection to avoid discomfort
via our devices, vices, or the endless accumulation of 'stuff'.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve caught myself doing this.
We’re all subject to these unhealthy patterns,
but we'll always have opportunities to shift them.
Being human is complicated.
Of course it’s easier to distract ourselves and disconnect —
so we reach for the ‘good’ feelings through quick dopamine hits
in a passive attempt to fix any discomfort and feel better fast.
This is absentminded avoidance,
and it’s numbing us to the profound gift of being human ~
the FULL range of emotional experiences.
✨ In order to feel good, we must get good at feeling all of the feelings.
And in order to Allow yourself to feel all of the feelings,
you have to be able to actually Acknowledge what it is you’re feeling.
Our subconscious mind believes that,
instead of Acknowledging the difficult emotions,
if it just bypasses them with something more objectively pleasant
(insert food, scrolling, fantasy novels, shopping, gossiping, funny videos...)
it can protect us from pain and convince us that everything is okay.
But when we don’t clearly notice and validate what we're experiencing,
the feelings don't go away — they get buried in our bodies instead.
When our true feelings are bypassed and pushed down
they will eventually make themselves seen in other ways…
Emotional suppression inevitably leads to a gamut of psychosomatic symptoms.
Acknowledgment is an essential Self-Love practice.
It’s like a pressure relief valve ~
a way of ensuring that you’ll be present with what arises,
rather than burying it somewhere in your body.
It’s as simple as quietly (but audibly) naming to yourself
whatever you’re noticing about your present experience —
be it thoughts, sensations, feelings, beliefs, emotions, or patterns.
As you continue to practice Awareness of what you’re feeling,
take the next step by Acknowledging it honestly to yourself.
Because Being truly Seen by ourselves,
is a profoundly healing practice of Self-Love.

“Acknowledgement has great power… Merely acknowledge and accept as valid
everything that goes on inside you.” ~ Bill O’Hanlon
