You Belong to You

Earlier this week, I wrote about the pervasive feeling

that something is missing from our lives,

and how the way to fulfillment is through the love we offer ourselves.

 

Today, let’s look at the roots of feeling like ‘something is missing’,

and explore how the cause of it is our shared core human need: to belong.

 

Our collective human experience has always been one of striving for survival,

while doing everything we can to ensure that we belong.

 

This is how we’re biologically wired.

It starts in infancy because it’s evolution in action.

 

It makes sense that belonging to a tribe was fundamental to survival.

But even as we’ve evolved into these modern times,

we’ve continued to rely on belonging to things outside of ourselves —

relationships, families, communities, jobs, places, even accomplishments.

 

And while these things can offer points of connection,

they can’t create the deeper sense of belonging that we’re longing for now.

 

Because the next evolution is to understand that you belong to yourself.

And deeply knowing this in your core is an essential aspect of Self-Love.

 

Of course, we all have a quiet longing within us to feel at home with others.

It’s the unspoken reason beneath everything we do,

from our daily routines to our aspirations, our rituals, our gatherings,

even our moments of joy and celebration.

 

But belonging is not ultimately about a place, a family, or a group

(though we often believe it is).

 

Belonging is about your connection with yourself.

 

It’s about feeling at home within your own heart.

 

So I invite you to look gently inward…

Beyond your roles and titles, beyond your expectations for yourself

and the expectations you imagine others have of you.

Beyond your contributions and accomplishments.

 

Settle into the part of you that has always known that you belong.

And that you belong simply because you belong to you.

 

You don’t need to do anything for that to be true.

Just allow yourself to receive the connection that already exists within...

Connect to the miracle of being the soul that you are,

as you inhabit this human body temple.

 

And notice that, whether you acknowledge it or not,

the essence of who you truly are

has always been securely anchored within you.

 

Your belonging is not dependent on getting everything right.

And it’s not created by fitting in.

 

Belonging is the sacred practice of loving yourself so deeply

that you are unwaveringly rooted in your authentic self.

Because being your most authentic self is the only way to truly belong.

 

You are your person.

The only person you belong to for the entirety of your life.

 

When you love and embrace yourself in your Wholeness,

you will always find belonging there.

I invite you to close your eyes for a moment.

Take a deep breath in,

and as you slowly exhale

imagine welcoming all aspects of yourself exactly as you are…

Knowing that whatever arises within you belongs here.
