Trusting the Pull Toward Pleasure

Updated: Mar 2

I’ve been feeling very distracted the past couple of days.

My attention keeps drifting away from what I think I ‘should’ be working on

and instead keeps pulling me back into a fun deep dive

on a topic that’s bringing me a lot of joy right now.

A topic that happens to have nothing to do with my work.

I’m witnessing this push-and-pull within myself.

My mind keeps trying to redirect me back to what it believes I ‘should be doing.

But my heart keeps pulling me toward the joy of this new fascination,

inviting me to play and explore and follow my curiosity for a while.

I can feel the serious "manager" part of me

trying its best to control the curious, heart-led part.

When we try to control ourselves or others,

we like to convince ourselves it’s an act of love,

but control is not loving — it's based in fear.

It often shows up when a scared little child-part within us

is afraid of what might happen if we follow our heart.

This is understandable.

Many of us learned that it’s not safe to be our truest selves.

But learning to fully love ourselves now,

means learning to trust where our heart is trying to lead us.

Self-Love teaches us to trust the restorative pull toward what brings us joy.

Last night, I was sharing this push-and-pull experience with a dear friend.

She gently invited me to take a step back

and notice the self-judgment embedded in the word ‘distracted’.

It’s a word that instantly makes us feel like we need to control ourselves —

because it implies that we’re not doing what we’re supposed to be doing.

Instead, she offered a reframe:

It’s not that I’m distracted…

I’m allowing myself to lean into and trust what’s bringing me pleasure.

As I reflect on this, I’m feeling so much compassion for myself.

The past several weeks have been both busy and deeply emotional.

I showed up fully with focus and productivity in my work,

while also staying present with the painful emotions of my son leaving home.

It was an intense couple of weeks.

With this more loving perspective, it makes sense to me now…

This week, I have more open time than usual in my calendar,

so my heart is guiding me towards pleasure.

Towards more regulation and rest.

Of course! ~ it’s a beautiful way to balance out the intensity of the past few weeks.

Instead of allowing myself to be controlled by fears about productivity,

I’m trusting that where my heart is leading my attention right now

is actually what’s best to support my overall well-being.

Self-Love helps us trust that it’s safe to let our hearts lead the way.

💗 Trusting Your Heart:

I invite you to put a hand on your heart

and take an intentional deep breath.

As you slowly release it, lean into curiosity and ask yourself:

"If I trusted my heart to lead, what’s something it would guide me to do today?"

Can you set aside some time for the answer ~ simply for the joy of it?
