What You've Been Searching For

Last week, I wrote about feeling distracted,
but there’s another layer to the conversation that feels important to explore.
We’ve been trained by society to feel like we’re always missing something.
Which is why we feel the need to always stay productive.
We keep striving.
We keep achieving.
We keep reaching for more.
At the end of the day, we're exhausted and empty,
still feeling like something’s missing and we’re not quite ‘there’,
so we often spend our evenings lost in distractions
to soothe the ache of feeling unfulfilled.
We’re trying to fill a hole
where something we can’t quite name is lacking in our life.
But no amount of distraction can help us avoid the emptiness,
and no amount of striving or productivity can fill that void.
✨ We’ll feel lost and empty until we find fulfillment within ourselves.
Because what’s missing is deep connection,
an internal sense of safety,
complete understanding,
and the love that only you can offer to yourself.
But instead, we’re all addicted to distractions.
We keep trying to fill the void within us
through anything other than our own love…
Because that’s what we’ve been taught to do.
And there’s an endless number of addictive substitutes we turn to:
Overworking
Extreme exercise
Needless shopping
Alcohol
Food
Incessant busyness
Online content consumption
Gaming
Gossiping
Nicotine
Superficial self-care
Sex
Drugs
And everything in-between.
These coping mechanisms can feel necessary for survival,
so let’s practice self-compassion instead of being hard on ourselves.
We tend to judge some of these addictions more harshly than others
(in ourselves and when we see them in others)
but beneath them all is the same existential longing.
We’re trying to distract ourselves from emptiness.
We’re trying to soothe the ache of disconnection.
But nothing outside of ourselves can sustainably provide that for us.
What you’re truly seeking is to be fully seen.
To belong.
To feel secure…
With you. By you.
Inside of yourself.
The void you feel is not proof that something is missing.
It’s an invitation to return to your own heart.
Because nothing has ever been missing ~
Your Wholeness is simply waiting for your own acknowledgment.
Everything you’re searching for has always been inside of you.

"You are the love you seek." ~ Rumi
🩷 A Small Step Inward:
Take a deep, intentional breath in.
As you slowly exhale,
place a hand on your heart and bring your attention inward.
Whisper softly to yourself:
"I’m willing to believe in my Wholeness."
