Your Body Needs Your Love

Updated: 2 days ago

Each new year,

the most common resolutions and goals have to do with our bodies.

Like getting in shape or losing weight to fit an ideal size.

Or "fixing" whatever may be wrong with our physical health.

And while it’s important to take good care of our body,

we have to be careful of the energy and intention behind our actions.

We tend to approach our bodies with criticism, pressure,

and the belief that something must be fixed.

But your body isn’t a problem to solve.

It’s not an enemy to wage battle against.

I promise that your body has never been against you.

It will carry you for your entire life.

It will hold your joy, grief, illness, health,

and everything in between.

And you're the primary one responsible for its care.

Your body is truly your temple.

Your sacred temple, created by the Divine, to house your soul.

Here’s a gentle question to ask yourself:

Does your body feel safe in its relationship with you?

Imagine if the parts of your body that you judge and want to fix

were children, overhearing every mean thought you have about them.

What would you say to help your body feel safe with you?

To let those parts know they belong?

That they're loved?

The healthiest thing for your body is a safe relationship with you.

Your body is tuned in to your every thought...

Is love the loudest voice it hears?

Loving your body doesn’t mean you can’t want some things to change.

But it does mean approaching changes with loving energy.

As someone with chronic health conditions,

I have to be sure to listen to my body's needs and respond with love,

instead of trying to fix or control everything about it.

We can approach exercise with loving intentions.

Instead of punishing our bodies into shape,

we can strengthen our muscles mindfully, with appreciation.

What if when you stretch or walk,

you send gratitude to your bones, joints, muscles, and tendons

for carrying you through life?

What if when you take a deep breath, you offer deep thanks to your lungs?

And to your heart for beating faithfully…

And to your nervous system for trying to protect you.

We can bathe ourselves with devotional presence.

Offer gentle touch and a self-massage to the places that ache.

Choose food as an act of intentional nourishment, not control.

Self-Love includes loving your body ~

this intelligent, complex, magical living organism

that is you in physical form.

Knowing that it will never be flawless,

but it will always be devoted to you.

When your body feels safe with you,

when you listen to its needs and tend to it with loving care,

health becomes its natural expression.

Your body is not a project for you to perfect ~

It’s a relationship for you to nurture.

Your body is your lifelong temple.

Treat it with care, reverence, and love ~

as if you’re going to be in it for the rest of your life.

"I said to my body softly, ‘I want to be your friend.’

It took a long breath and replied, ‘I have been waiting my whole life for this.’"

~ Nayyirah Waheed

🌿 Creating Safety in Your Body:

Place one hand on your body anywhere that feels right.

Take a slow breath in. And a longer breath out.

Quietly offer this reassurance:

"I am willing to practice loving all parts of you."
