Breathing Yourself Home

I must confess that I have a bit of a love affair with breathing…
Not the automatic kind that happens without noticing,
but the intentional kind that lovingly guides me back home to myself.
Breathing In
is the very first thing that every single one of us did when we came into this world.
Breathing Out
will be the very last thing we do when we leave it.
There is no other way.
Our breath serves as the bookends of our life ~
the soft portal at both the beginning and end of our journey…
the only possible entry and exit point for this experience of being in a body.
Have you ever thought about why our lungs cradle our heart?
The lungs do more than protect the heart and keep us alive ~
they guide our heart with the rhythm of our breath.
The breath tells our heart how fast or slow to beat,
which actually informs the emotional experience we’re having.
✨ Your breath shapes your experience of life.
And here’s the beautiful part:
you have the power to consciously guide your breath…
Meaning, you can consciously guide the emotional experience you’re having.
Our breath is the key that opens the door to self-regulation.
It’s a power we carry with us, but so often forget to use.
We may not have to think about breathing,
But when we do —
We are stepping into our full power.
When we’re anxious, fearful, stressed, distracted, disconnected…
Our breathing is rapid, shallow, and irregular.
When we’re calm, positive, relaxed, curious, focused…
Our breathing is slow, deep, and steady.
Simply pausing to notice when you’re feeling off,
and then intentionally guiding your breath to be slower, deeper, and more steady,
will bring your nervous system back into balance
and gently shift the emotional state you’re in.
There are many breathing techniques you can use to achieve different outcomes,
but at the heart of it, it’s really just this simple:
you can calm and center yourself in any moment
by focusing on breathing deeply and fully into your belly and lungs,
and then guiding your out-breath to be as long and slow as possible.
This is an act of Self-Love in it’s purest form ~
using your power to center and regulate yourself.
When you practice breathing with intention,
you’ll find that it’s not just about calming down,
it’s about loving yourself back home.

"Breathing in, I calm body and mind. Breathing out, I smile." ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn
🏡 In the moments you feel off,
I invite you to let your breath
become a hand you hold out to yourself, saying gently:
“I’m here. I’ve got you. I love you. You are home.”
