Surrender is the Way Through

Updated: Feb 4

My heart is aching today.

I’m facing a transition that I always knew would come.

My dear son is leaving the nest and moving far away.

I trust his journey and support him in stepping into his own life,

but this moment is still deeply painful for me.

It’s stirring up sooo many big emotions.

There’s grief, fear, tenderness, and loss, to name a few.

And yet… life goes on.

There’s still responsibilities to tend to,

work that I care about,

people here that I love,

and moments I want to show up for.

But there’s a part of me that wants to crawl under the covers and cry.

Just feel sorry for myself and wallow in how hard this feels.

That desire makes complete sense.

There’s also a part that wants to get lost in the fear spiral,

and ruminate in the stories my mind is creating about this situation.

That’s understandable too.

And then there’s a part that wants to push all the feelings away,

stay distracted, and pretend it’s not happening.

Of course that part is here.

But I've learned that when we’re in emotional pain,

wallowing, ruminating, and resisting

are what keep us from moving through it.

We’re being asked to allow the feeling and be fully present with it.

To move through difficult emotions, we must surrender to the feeling.

So right now, my Self-Love practice is simple,

but it requires vulnerability and courage.

When a wave of emotion rises, I soften my resistance and allow it.

I wrap my arms around myself.

I breathe into the sensation.

I feel it in my body.

And I love myself right here, as it moves through.

This is different from wallowing in the pain.

Or getting lost in a story about it.

Or bypassing it entirely.

This is being fully present with the emotion.

When I surrender to what I’m being asked to feel,

and stay lovingly present with it,

then it washes through me.

And within a few minutes,

I can return my focus to what's in front of me…

until the next wave arrives.

When it feels like too much, I practice a little micro-surrender ~

with one deep breath, one moment of presence with it, one long exhale.

I know it can feel scary to sit with our feelings.

Sometimes we’re afraid they might swallow us whole.

But with practice, patience, and gentleness,

we can let ourselves be present with what our hearts are asking us to feel.

I’ve learned that it’s safe to feel.

And I can hold myself through the things that hurt,

because it’s safe to stay present with myself.

It’s actually preferable to me now.

Surrendering to our emotions doesn’t change our circumstances,

but it does change our relationship with what's happening.

And more importantly, it deepens our relationship with ourselves.

No matter what life brings, we can meet it with presence…

and trust that whatever unfolds is part of our becoming.

🩵 A Moment of Surrender:

I invite you to place a hand on your heart with me.

Take a slow, deep breath in… Pause for just a moment.

Release it out even more slowly.

And then gently whisper to yourself:

"I’m willing to practice allowing myself to be present with my feelings."
