Expanding Your Compassion
Updated: 6 days ago
Earlier this week,
I wrote about having compassion for your younger self.
And about how compassion can come from understanding
the lack of understanding.
I’ve learned that the more compassion we have for ourselves,
the more compassion we can have for others.
Because when we begin to understand
how our own painful experiences, wounds, fears,
and lack of awareness
have shaped our choices,
then we can begin to understand
that other people's choices
have also been shaped by their experiences.
We've all experienced what it's like to make decisions
from the awareness we have at this point in our life,
in contrast to the lack of awareness we had in our younger years.
We know what it's like to repeat a pattern
before knowing how to interrupt it.
We know what it’s like to react from a wound
before learning how to tend to it instead.
We know what it’s like to make choices that aren’t good for us
before we’ve learned how to choose differently.
And when we develop that understanding for ourselves
it can soften the way we see other people.
We can have more understanding and less judgement of others.
And we can expand our compassion to include them.
✨Your own humanity teaches you to have compassion for the humanity in others.
You don't have to understand someone else's choices
to recognize that they're human,
imperfect,
and learning as they go.
Just like you.
I want to point out that we can have compassion
without excusing harmful behavior.
We don’t have to abandon our boundaries
or accept behavior that isn't okay.
Compassion simply allows us to open our hearts
and understand the lack of understanding in others ~
because none of us know what we don’t know yet.
We can have compassion for all the ways
that we hurt ourselves and each other
while at the same time we're still learning
how to love ourselves more fully.
Self-Love teaches us compassion and understanding for ourselves,
which naturally expands our compassion and understanding for others.
